Islamic necropolis (maqbara) of "Can Fonoll".

The maqbara of can Fonoll is an Islamic necropolis (ss. XII-XIII AD) located in the parish of Sant Jordi de ses Salines. It comprises a total of 167 burials in simple pit, placing the deceased on his right side, according to the order prescribed by the Koran. Their orientations are NE-SW, being the heads on southwest and looking the faces to southeast. It is unclear whether this provision may be due to:

1. The berber origin of much of the colonizer contingent of Ibiza. Fact that could justify this placement orientated to Maghreb.
2. Or maybe in relation to the main mosque of the time located in Tunisia: Kairouan.
3. Or it could be, with some variation, that they tried to guide the deceased to Mecca (paradigmatic ritual in Muslim world).

Not far from this cemetery were found the remains of an Islamic farmhouse (rural settlement) from which they come ceramic forms that we have attached.

At this site were also found a series of trenches intended for vine crop that are been dated for punicoromana era (ss.-II / I).
